AAPT Personal Training Certificate

AAPT’s curriculum is thorough, consisting of 150 hours of classroom lectures and 150 hours of hands-on equipment training in New York & Boston. After completing our personal training courses, you will receive a certificate from AAPT that sets you apart in the fitness industry as an Expert Personal Trainer sought after by some of the most well-known brands.

Thoughtfully-Designed Curriculum

The AAPT curriculum is carefully designed to achieve a balance between scientific knowledge and physical discipline. Learn in-depth from a full program of 50 hours of anatomy, plus 25 hours each in overview courses like the history of fitness, and physical science courses like kinesiology, nutrition, physiology, and biomechanics. These courses plus additional hours of program design and the business of personal training prepare you to develop a successful career or business that will make the most of your physical training and personal commitment to each client.

In-Person vs. Online Fitness Training Certification

There are important differences between an AAPT Personal Trainer Certificate and online certification. First and foremost, there is no substitute for hands-on experience. Learning online means learning on your own. AAPT offers 150 hours of in-person class instruction in addition to hands-on equipment training. Our instructors guide you through the material—ask questions and learn from other students.

AAPT’s program is recognized internationally and accredited nationally by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), and we’re licensed by the New York and Massachusetts Departments of Education. Certifications from online personal training schools do not have the benefit of these credentials, which means that we must adhere to a much higher standard of learning.

Prerequisites, Recertification and Continuing Education (CE)

  • Prerequisites: A high school diploma or equivalent plus high-school level written and conversational English comprehensions are required to enroll in AAPT’s personal training certification program.
  • Recertification and CE: Your AAPT certificate never has to be renewed, nor are you required to take periodic continuing education courses. Your AAPT certificate lasts a lifetime, while online certifications require you to re-certify every few years and bear the cost of retaking the exam.

Different Personal Training Certification Types

There are many reputable personal trainer certification programs in the U.S. Leading organizations offering personal fitness training certification include the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the National Federation of Personal Trainers (NFPT).

How do you know which certification is best? The short answer is that no one certification is necessarily the best—they each have their strengths and different areas of focus.

AAPT has partnered with NASM because of their solid reputation in the industry. NASM infuses the latest scientific research on human performance into their certifications, and they pioneered the Optimum Performance Training (OPT) method—the first science-based training system in the industry. NASM’s specializations include everything from competitive athlete training to rehabilitation to nutrition. AAPT is proud to partner with NASM, as we’re confident that NASM certification gives our students an edge in the arena of personal fitness training.

Note: AAPT course credits are transferable on a case-by-case basis.
